Ray Heck, 'Azala', Circus Del Oro, 1973.
Ray, born in Hayling Island, was a fakir, a fire-eater, and would bend metal bars as part of his act. Ray has had more than his fair share of mishaps and was taught a harsh lesson in being aware of circus animals from a deceptively sweet-looking, pig-tailed Macaque. This devilish little monkey had one day had enough of Ray's teasing and penchant for Indian arm wrestling. Although small, these creatures are very strong. It was during one of these arm wrestles that the monkey fastened itself to Ray's arm and delivered a rapid succession of deep, piercing bites – much like a person would eat a corn on the cob.
