Martin
Lacey, Belle Vue, Christmas 1981.
Martin independently presented his first lions at 18, but at the moment has
to content himself with announcing, owing to injury. This injury was sustained
during one of his acts when he slipped his knee cap while bending to put his
head in the lion's mouth. Martin pushed his knee cap back in place and finished
showing the five lions. Upon leaving the ring he bandaged his knee and, in
what must have been quite considerable pain, drove from Cleethorpes to Falkirk
to perform an act with Gandey's circus the same evening. Two of the lions
in the picture are Kassanga and Massai who starred in the cult classic An
American Werewolf in London. Kassanga is the highest paid lion in the country
and so it is small wonder that Martin named his family home 'Kassanga Manor'.
